About Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano, founded in 1924, are the third club of Madrid and the first club of Vallecas, the working-class barrio whose identity they carry like the red sash on their shirt. Vallecas is small, loud, roofless at one end and utterly unlike anywhere else in La Liga.

Rayo's history is a yo-yo of promotions and relegations worn as a badge of honour, punctuated by miracles: the UEFA Cup quarter-final run of 2001, top-half league finishes on the smallest budget in the division, and victories over both Madrid giants that the barrio sings about for years.

The club's supporters are famous for their politics and their solidarity as much as their noise. Rayo are what football looks like when it still belongs to its neighbourhood.
