How to Watch the 2026 World Cup in Australia

Good news for Australian fans: there is no paywall. SBS holds the exclusive Australian rights and is showing all 104 matches live and free to air across SBS and SBS VICELAND, with every game also streaming free on SBS On Demand. The catch is the clock: with the football in North America and Australia in winter, most matches land in the early-morning-to-midday window. This guide covers the channels, the free streaming, the AEST and AWST kickoff times, and the Socceroos.

The short version: SBS is the only place you need. All 104 matches are free to air on SBS and SBS VICELAND and free to stream on SBS On Demand. Optus Sport, which streamed 2018 and 2022, does not hold the 2026 rights, so there is nothing extra to buy.

SBS has the lot, free to air

For the first 48-team World Cup, the Australian broadcast rights sit entirely with SBS, the public multicultural broadcaster. SBS secured the full package ahead of rival bidders, and is showing every single one of the 104 matches live and free.

This is a change from 2018 and 2022, when Optus Sport held the streaming rights and SBS sub-licensed a selection of games. For 2026 there is no split and no subscription tier: the entire tournament, from the Estadio Azteca opener on 11 June to the MetLife Stadium Final on 19 July, is on free-to-air television and free streaming. Optus Sport does not carry the 2026 World Cup.

The channels and the app

Everything runs through SBS. Here is what each platform does and when to use it.

SBS VICELAND

SBS Audio
Free radioMultilingual
SBS radio and audio coverage, the option for matches in the small hours or on the move. As Australia's multicultural broadcaster, SBS typically offers commentary in multiple languages reflecting the country's football communities.

The clock is the hard part

Australia is on standard time in June and July (no daylight saving), so the eastern states run on AEST, UTC+10 and Perth on AWST, UTC+8. With the matches in North America, most kickoffs fall between roughly 2:00 AM and 1:00 PM AEST. Afternoon and evening games over there become early-morning to midday games here.

The friendliest slots are the late-evening North American kickoffs on the US West Coast, which land around midday AEST. The toughest are the East Coast and Mexico afternoon games, which become pre-dawn viewing in Australia. Use our free calendar and schedule pages, which store every kickoff in UTC and convert to your local time automatically, or install the WorldCuply Match-Day Notifier browser extension for a reminder 30 minutes before each match.
