The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest in history: the first with 48 teams, split into 12 groups of four and played across the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July. More teams means a new shape. The top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advance to a brand-new Round of 32, the extra knockout round added for this tournament. Here is exactly how it works: the groups, how teams qualify, the best-thirds rule, the tiebreakers, the knockout bracket through to the MetLife final, and the math behind 104 matches.

The short version. 48 teams, 12 groups of four, three group games each. The top two in every group plus the eight best third-placed teams (32 sides in total) go through to a new Round of 32. From there it is straight knockout: Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the Final at MetLife Stadium on 19 July 2026. The winners will play eight matches in all.
The Big Change
From 32 teams to 48
Every World Cup from 1998 to 2022 had 32 teams. The 2026 edition jumps to 48, the format FIFA approved in 2017 and is using for the first time.
The expansion adds 16 places, shared out across the confederations so that more nations from Africa, Asia, CONCACAF and elsewhere reach the finals. That is why 2026 features first-time qualifiers such as Uzbekistan, Cape Verde, Curacao and Jordan alongside the established powers. It is also why the tournament is co-hosted by three countries and spread across 16 host cities, the only practical way to fit a competition this size.
The trade-off is a longer, bigger event: 104 matches instead of 64, and a tournament that runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026, just under six weeks.
Stage One
The group stage: 12 groups of four
The 48 teams are drawn into 12 groups of four, labelled A to L. The draw was held in Washington, D.C. in December 2025.
Three games each. Every team plays the other three in its group once, so each side is guaranteed three matches. That is 72 group games in total.
Hosts are spread out. The three host nations were seeded into separate groups: Mexico in Group A, Canada in Group B and the United States in Group D.
It runs 11 to 27 June. The group stage opens with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June and finishes on 27 June, when the last groups, including Group K and Group L, play their final round.
Final games kick off together. As always, the last two matches in each group start at the same time, so no team knows a result it can play to before kickoff.

Stage Two
How 32 teams reach the knockouts
This is the part that is new for 2026. With 12 groups instead of eight, the qualification math changes:
Top two go through: 24 teams. The winner and runner-up of each of the 12 groups advance automatically. That is 24 sides.
Best eight thirds go through: 8 teams. The 12 third-placed teams are ranked against each other, and the best eight also qualify. The bottom four thirds are eliminated.
That makes 32. 24 group qualifiers plus eight best thirds fill the new Round of 32. Two-thirds of the field reaches the knockout phase.
The best-thirds idea is borrowed from the European Championship, which has used a 24-team version since 2016. It means a third-placed team with a decent points and goal-difference record can still go through, so very few groups are dead by the final round.
The New Round
The brand-new Round of 32
Because 32 teams now reach the knockouts, the bracket needs an extra round at the front. That is the Round of 32, brand new to the World Cup in 2026.
The 32 qualifiers are slotted into a pre-set bracket based on their group position, and they play 16 single-leg knockout ties from 28 June to 3 July 2026. There are no replays: a tie level after 90 minutes goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties. The 16 winners go into the Round of 16, and from there the tournament looks like the World Cups fans already know.
One practical effect: the eventual champions play eight matches to win the trophy (three group games plus five knockout rounds), one more than under the old 32-team format. For a projection of how the bracket fills out, see our knockout bracket guide.

When teams finish level, FIFA applies a fixed order of tiebreakers. There are two separate questions: who finishes where inside a group, and which thirds are the best eight.
Inside a group, teams level on points are separated in this order:
Goal difference across all three group games.
Goals scored across all three group games.
If still level, head-to-head results among the tied teams: points, then goal difference, then goals scored in the matches between them.
A disciplinary fair-play score (fewer yellow and red cards is better).
Finally, a drawing of lots by FIFA.
Ranking the third-placed teams, the 12 thirds are compared on points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then the disciplinary score, and finally a drawing of lots. The top eight advance. Because thirds from different groups did not play each other, head-to-head cannot apply here, so goal difference and goals scored carry extra weight.
The Numbers
The 104-match math
Where do 104 matches come from? Here is the breakdown:
72 group matches. 12 groups of four, with six matches per group.
16 in the Round of 32. The new opening knockout round.
8 in the Round of 16, then 4 quarter-finals and 2 semi-finals.
1 third-place playoff and 1 Final.
That is 72 plus 32 knockout matches, for 104 in all, up from 64 in 2022. The total tournament length grew only modestly because more matches are played in parallel, especially in the group stage and the Round of 32.
Questions & Answers
Frequently asked questions
How many teams are at the 2026 World Cup?
The 2026 World Cup has 48 teams, up from 32 at every tournament from 1998 to 2022. It is the largest World Cup in history, hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July 2026, with 104 matches in 16 host cities.
How does the 2026 World Cup group stage work?
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four, labelled A to L. Each team plays the other three in its group once, so every side plays three group games. The group stage runs from 11 to 27 June 2026 and accounts for 72 of the 104 matches.
How do teams qualify from the group stage in 2026?
The top two teams in each of the 12 groups qualify automatically, which is 24 teams. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also go through. That makes 32 teams in total, who enter the brand-new Round of 32.
What is the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup?
The Round of 32 is a new knockout round added for 2026 because more teams now reach the knockouts. The 32 qualifiers play 16 single-leg knockout ties from 28 June to 3 July 2026. Winners advance to the Round of 16, and the format then follows the familiar path of last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
How are the eight best third-placed teams decided?
The 12 third-placed teams are ranked against each other, first on points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary record, and finally a drawing of lots if still level. The top eight in that ranking qualify, and the bottom four are eliminated.
What are the group tiebreakers at the 2026 World Cup?
Teams level on points in a group are separated first by overall goal difference, then total goals scored. If still tied, FIFA applies head-to-head results among the level teams (points, then goal difference, then goals scored), then a disciplinary fair-play score, and finally a drawing of lots.
How many matches are at the 2026 World Cup?
There are 104 matches, up from 64 in 2022. That breaks down as 72 group games, 16 in the Round of 32, eight in the Round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals, the third-place playoff and the Final. The winners will play eight matches to lift the trophy, one more than under the old 32-team format.
When and where is the 2026 World Cup final?
The Final is on Sunday 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the New York metropolitan area, kicking off at 3pm Eastern. The tournament opens on 11 June 2026 with hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Why did FIFA expand the World Cup to 48 teams?
FIFA approved expansion to 48 teams in 2017 to give more nations a place at the finals, spread the game globally and increase revenue. The 2026 edition is the first to use it, with more confederation slots, including a larger allocation for African, Asian and CONCACAF teams.
Does a third-placed team still have a chance to win the World Cup?
Yes. A team that finishes third in its group but ranks in the best eight thirds qualifies for the Round of 32 and is then in the same single-elimination bracket as everyone else. In theory a best-third team could win seven straight knockout ties and lift the trophy.
