The only stadium to host three World Cups

Estadio Azteca, in the Coyoacan area of southern Mexico City, is the largest stadium in Latin America and one of the most storied grounds in world football. With the 2026 opener it becomes the only stadium in history to host the men's FIFA World Cup three times, after 1970 and 1986.

It has staged two World Cup Finals, Brazil's 1970 win over Italy with Pele's team often called the greatest of all time, and Argentina's 1986 triumph, the tournament of Diego Maradona's two goals against England, the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century. For 2026 it returns to the global stage to open the first 48-team World Cup.

Under FIFA's clean-venue sponsorship policy the stadium is called Mexico City Stadium (Estadio Ciudad de Mexico) during the tournament. Commercially it sold its naming rights and is branded Estadio Banorte, but that name does not appear in FIFA materials for the World Cup. For how it sits among all 16 venues, see our stadiums and host cities hub.

The 2026 World Cup kicks off here. Host nation Mexico open Group A against South Africa in front of a packed Azteca, the first ball of a 104-match tournament that ends at MetLife Stadium on 19 July. The opener traditionally features a host nation, and Mexico get the honour at the most famous of the three host countries' venues.

For more on El Tri's group and route, see our Mexico team guide and the Group A guide. The opener is followed at the Azteca by Mexico's third group match against the Czech Republic on 24 June.

The thin air and the rebuild

At roughly 2,200 metres (about 7,200 feet) above sea level, the Azteca plays higher than almost any other major World Cup venue, and the altitude is a genuine competitive factor.

Visiting players who have not acclimatised tire faster in the thin air, and the ball flies farther with less swerve. It is one of the reasons Mexico carry a home advantage in Mexico City that no other co-host venue can match. Both of the stadium's previous World Cups were partly defined by the conditions as much as the football.

The stadium closed in 2024 for a major refurbishment ahead of the tournament: replaced seating throughout, new video screens and LED lighting, a refreshed facade, upgraded locker rooms, and a hybrid grass pitch. It reopened on 28 March 2026 with a friendly between Mexico and Portugal, leaving roughly ten weeks before the World Cup opener.

How to reach the Azteca

The stadium is in the south of Mexico City and is reachable by public transport, though matchdays are busy.

The opener and the city

Opening day in Mexico City will be one of the great occasions of the tournament: the host nation, a full Azteca, and a venue layered with World Cup history. The city offers an enormous range of food, culture and nightlife for visiting fans, and the south of the city around the stadium has its own pre-match atmosphere on big days.
