Team Guide · 2026 World Cup
Austria at the 2026 World Cup
Austria are back at a World Cup for the first time since 1998, and they arrive as one of the most fashionable dark horses in the field. Under Ralf Rangnick, the German pressing pioneer, Das Team won their qualifying group to end a 28-year wait. Captain David Alaba of Real Madrid leads the side, record scorer Marko Arnautovic finally gets his World Cup at 37, and a deep Bundesliga core of Konrad Laimer, Marcel Sabitzer, Christoph Baumgartner, Xaver Schlager and Nicolas Seiwald powers the engine room. Drawn into Group J with defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Jordan, this is the squad, the identity, the fixtures and the dark-horse case.

Back after 28 years. Ralf Rangnick's high-pressing Austria won their qualifying group ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania to reach their first World Cup since 1998. Captained by David Alaba and spearheaded by record scorer Marko Arnautovic, Austria open against Jordan at Levi's Stadium on 16 June before facing Argentina in Dallas and Algeria in Kansas City.

Rangnick built a squad in his own image: athletic, hard-running and steeped in the German and Austrian top flights. Newcomers Carney Chukwuemeka and Paul Wanner both declared for Austria to add depth, while long-term injuries kept regulars Gernot Trauner and Maximilian Wober out of the final selection. Group J
The group and the fixtures
Austria were drawn into Group J with defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Jordan. Argentina are the seeds and overwhelming favourites, so Austria's realistic battle for the second automatic place is with Algeria, while the opener against debutants Jordan is the match they will target for three points. Their games are spread across the Bay Area, Dallas and Kansas City.

The Ceiling
How far can Das Team go?
Austria are not seeded, but they are one of the most respected unseeded teams in the tournament, with a real route into the knockouts:
- A clear identity. Rangnick's relentless press makes Austria exhausting to play against and capable of unsettling far bigger names.
- Bundesliga depth. With 14 players drawn from the German top flight, the squad is fit, athletic and used to high-intensity football week in, week out.
- Star quality where it counts. Alaba's leadership, Sabitzer's class and Arnautovic's finishing give Austria top-level presence in key areas.
- The format helps. With the top two and the eight best third-placed sides advancing, Austria are well placed to reach the Round of 32 from Group J.
- Momentum. A first World Cup in 28 years, reached with games to spare, has this group believing it belongs on the big stage.
Argentina are favourites to top the group, but the games against Jordan and Algeria are winnable, and a positive result against the champions is not beyond a side as well drilled as this. If Austria reach the knockouts, few would want to face Rangnick's pressing machine.
