Team Guide · 2026 World Cup
Algeria at the 2026 World Cup
The Desert Foxes are back on the biggest stage for the first time since 2014, and they arrive with a story. Captain Riyad Mahrez, at 35, returns to the World Cup in what looks like his last, the creative soul of a side coached by Vladimir Petkovic, one of the few managers at the tournament who has led a country at a World Cup before. The squad mixes Mahrez and a strong defence with a new generation in Amine Gouiri, Mohamed Amoura, Fares Chaibi and goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine. Algeria land in Group J with defending champions Argentina, Austria and debutants Jordan. This is the squad, the group, the fixtures, and the case for a return to the knockouts.

Squad confirmed. Vladimir Petkovic named his Algeria group in late May 2026, with Riyad Mahrez as captain. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine, was included, while the big talking point was the omission of midfielder Ismael Bennacer and the recall of Nabil Bentaleb. Algeria open against Argentina at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on 16 June.

Petkovic mixed a European-based core with players from the domestic and Gulf leagues. The headline call was leaving out AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer, balanced by the experienced recall of Nabil Bentaleb. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who represents Algeria through his heritage, and a young attacking group around Mahrez signal a side in transition. Club listings can change over the summer transfer window.
Group J
The group and the fixtures
Algeria were drawn into Group J with defending champions Argentina, Austria and World Cup debutants Jordan. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, are the clear favourites, so the real fight is for second place between Algeria and a well-organised Austria. Algeria play two of their three games at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, with a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area in between.

The Ceiling
How far can the Desert Foxes go?
Algeria are unlikely to trouble the very top of the tournament, but they have the talent and the format on their side to reach the knockouts on their return:
- A match-winning captain. Riyad Mahrez can still decide tight games, and an experienced supporting cast knows how to win when it matters, as the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title showed.
- Pace and youth in attack. Amine Gouiri and Mohamed Amoura give Algeria a modern, direct edge, with Fares Chaibi and Ibrahim Maza adding creativity behind them.
- A coach who has been here. Vladimir Petkovic led Switzerland at the 2018 World Cup and to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals, rare tournament experience for a team returning after 12 years.
- The format helps. With the top two and the best third-placed sides advancing, finishing second behind Argentina, or even third, can be enough to progress.
- The challenge. Beating Austria to second place and taking points off Jordan. Get the opener against Argentina out of the way without damage, and the group is there to be navigated.
For a country that reached the round of 16 in 2014, simply qualifying again is a milestone, but this squad will want more. A knockout place would make Mahrez's farewell, and Algeria's return, a success.
