Sweden at the 2026 World Cup
Sweden are back at a World Cup for the first time since 2018, and they arrive with the most talked-about strike force in the field. Alexander Isak of Liverpool and Viktor Gyokeres of Arsenal give Graham Potter two of the best centre-forwards on the planet, supported by captain Victor Lindelof at the back, Newcastle's Anthony Elanga on the wing and the precocious Tottenham teenager Lucas Bergvall in midfield. They got here the hard way, surviving the March 2026 playoffs with wins over Ukraine and Poland. Drawn into Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia, this is the squad, the qualification story, the fixtures and the case for a deep run.

Back with firepower. Graham Potter's Sweden ended an eight-year World Cup absence by coming through the playoffs, beating Ukraine and then Poland, where Viktor Gyokeres struck the late winner. With Gyokeres and Alexander Isak up front, Sweden open against Tunisia in Monterrey on 14 June before facing the Netherlands in Houston and Japan in Dallas.

Group F
The group and the fixtures
Sweden were drawn into Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia. The Netherlands are the seeds and favourites, so Sweden's most likely battle for the second automatic place is with a strong Japan side, while the opener against Tunisia is the match they will target for a winning start. Their first game is in Monterrey before two fixtures in the United States.

The Ceiling
How far can Sweden go?
Sweden are not seeded, but few unseeded teams arrive with this much attacking quality, and they have a genuine dark-horse profile:
- Elite firepower. Isak and Gyokeres give Sweden a strike force that can hurt any defence at the tournament, the kind of quality that wins knockout ties.
- Premier League spine. With Lindelof, Hien, Bergvall, Elanga and others, the squad is full of players competing at the top of English football week in, week out.
- A clear identity. Graham Potter has given the side structure and tactical clarity, and the calm to come through a tense playoff.
- The format helps. With the top two and the eight best third-placed sides advancing, Sweden have a strong chance of reaching the Round of 32 even from a competitive group.
- The unknown. Balancing two elite number nines is the puzzle. If Potter solves it, the ceiling is a long run; if not, Sweden could still ride their forwards a long way.
The Netherlands are favourites to top the group, but Sweden have the players to finish second or claim a best-third place. With Isak and Gyokeres in form, a run to the latter stages is far from fanciful, and that is what makes Sweden one of the most intriguing teams in the field.
