About Sunderland

Sunderland were founded in 1879 by a schoolteacher and were the first great champions of English football, winning six league titles between 1892 and 1936 with the Team of All the Talents. Few clubs carry more history per trophy-less decade since.

The 1973 FA Cup final remains one of Wembley's greatest shocks: Second Division Sunderland beating the mighty Leeds United 1-0 through Ian Porterfield's volley and Jimmy Montgomery's miracle double save.

The Stadium of Light, built in 1997 on the site of the Monkwearmouth Colliery, holds 49,000 and fills for the biggest support outside the traditional elite. After the documented lows of the Netflix years and the double relegation, promotion in 2025 brought Premier League football and the Wear-Tyne derby roaring back.
