The squad's headline attacker. A direct, two-footed Premier League forward at Newcastle United who can play through the middle or off the left, Wissa is the player opponents will plan around.
For the first time since 1974, when they played as Zaire, DR Congo are back at the World Cup. Sebastien Desabre's Leopards qualified the hard way: runners-up in CAF Group B, past Nigeria on penalties in the African play-off, then a 1-0 win over Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off, settled by Axel Tuanzebe deep in extra time. Now comes a brutal Group K draw against Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan, taken on by a squad scattered across the best leagues in Europe.
DR Congo's return to the World Cup is the story of a side that refused to lose at every elimination point along the way.
In the African qualifiers, the Leopards were drawn into CAF Group B with Senegal, Sudan, Togo, South Sudan and Mauritania. They finished second behind Senegal, which sent them into the continental play-off rather than straight to the finals.
There they met Nigeria. After a 1-1 draw across the African play-off final, DR Congo held their nerve in the shootout and won 4-3 on penalties, knocking out one of the continent's heavyweight names and booking a place in the intercontinental play-off.
The final hurdle was Jamaica, played in Guadalajara. The match was settled in the 100th minute, when defender Axel Tuanzebe forced home the only goal deep in extra time to win it 1-0 and end a 52-year absence. DR Congo's only previous World Cup was 1974 in West Germany, when the nation competed as Zaire.
Desabre's squad is built almost entirely on players plying their trade in Europe. These are the names most likely to decide whether the Leopards can spring a surprise in Group K.

The captain and defensive leader. A vastly experienced centre-back, formerly of Marseille and now at Lille, Mbemba marshals a back line that has become the foundation of this team.
One of the finest one-on-one defenders in the Premier League. The West Ham full-back's recovery pace and tackling give DR Congo elite quality at right-back against the pace of Portugal and Colombia.
A rising engine in midfield. The young Lille midfielder gives Desabre legs and progressive passing in the centre, the kind of profile a team needs to survive against stronger opposition.
The experienced goalscorer. A well-travelled striker now at Real Betis, Bakambu is one of DR Congo's all-time leading scorers and the squad's reference point in the box.
The play-off hero. The Burnley defender scored the extra-time goal against Jamaica that sent DR Congo to the finals, capping a long road back from injuries earlier in his career.
Sebastien Desabre named a 26-man squad weighted heavily towards Europe-based players, with three goalkeepers, a deep group of nine defenders, a large midfield pool and four senior forwards. Clubs are shown alongside each name.
Note: squads can change up to FIFA's final registration deadline through injury or late replacement. This page reflects Sebastien Desabre's named selection as reported around the squad announcement.
There were no soft landings for DR Congo in the draw. Group K pairs them with a European heavyweight, a South American contender and a debutant.
With the expanded 48-team format, the best four third-placed teams across the groups also advance, which keeps DR Congo's path to the round of 32 alive even in a demanding group. You can see how the full group shapes up on our Group K page.
